Richard McEwan, St. John's Guild
Chief Officer outside St. Raphael's
At the heart of the service offered by St. John’s Guild is a
structure of local branches. Each one provides an opportunity
for visually impaired people to meet on a regular basis for
spiritual fellowship, worship and social support. Each branch
undertakes it’s own programme, which reflects the needs and
interests of its members.
Branches are usually attached
to a parish church where the local priest acts as chaplain. The
aim of the group is to meet together for fellowship, worship and
for social support.
Organisation is in the hands
of the branch secretary. A common bond for all branches is
saying the Guild Office or celebration of the Eucharist. In 2002
we introduced Volunteer Regional Officers who support a group of
branches, visiting them regularly and offering information and
help as appropriate.
For many years, the Guild has
been organising Retreats, Pilgrimages and holidays. Visits to
the Shrine of our Lady at Walsingham have been particularly
appreciated.
Below is a list of branches together with meeting times and
dates. For further information, please contact the Branch
Secretary or the Guild Office.

Our Logo
The St. John’s Guild logo depicts an eagle
flying upwards to the sun. The Fourth Evangelist, St. John,
from the earliest times, has been identified with the fourth
symbolic creature in the Book of Revelation. The fourth creature
has the face of an eagle.
Jesus is the light of the world….St. John, the eagle, soars aloft
as Jerome says ‘to contemplate the divine nature of Jesus’
‘In thy light, may we see light’... |

St John’s
Guild –
Its History
1919 - 1950
The Guild was founded through the vision of
Miss Dorothy Light, an Anglo-Catholic, whose interest began when
she befriended a blind person in church witnessed the isolation
and loneliness in which blind people often lived. Together with a
blind priest, the Reverend Christian Waudby, a curate Sheffield,
the Guild was inaugurated at a meeting on 6th July 1919 in London.
Father Waudby became the first Warden/Chairman and Dorothy Light
the General Secretary. The first branch was opened at Birmingham
and within four years 150 Members and Associates had been
registered.
1950 - 2002
Mrs. Dorothy Thorpe was a worthy successor to
Miss Light in the 1950’s followed by Miss Joan Hull, the Principal
Tutor of the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
Miss Hull felt that our Chaplains should be more involved in the
work of the Guild and was instrumental in the appointment of a
parish priest becoming Warden.
During the early years, a Companionship of Prayer was started and
a Braille library was set up, which was later taken over by the
Royal National Institute for the Blind.
The New Church Messenger
In 1948, at the request of the Society for
the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, the Guild took on the
responsibility of undertaking the monthly publication in Braille
of the “Church Messenger”. Now renamed ‘The New Church
Messenger’, it celebrated its centenary in 1995 and remains
the only Anglican magazine produced specially for people who are
blind.
Overseas Branches
Since the late forties, in spite of
ever-increasing costs, the Guild has forged ahead and become more
widely known. A number of branches have been formed, including the
first overseas branch in Jerusalem in 1957.
The Guild has also given financial support to a school for blind
children in Penang and has helped pay towards the costs for
students from overseas studying at the College for Further
Education in Hereford.
Joining In Prayer
In 1966, The Guild Council decided to admit
blind non-Anglicans as ‘Companions’, who undertake to keep the
Rule of life in the context of their own Churches and to join
other Guild members in prayer for the visible unity of all
Christians.
Expanding St. Raphael's
St John's, our residential home in Worthing
closed in 1986 after 45 years, with some of the residents moving
to St Raphael's in St Albans. Part of the money from the sale of
the house was used to build further bedrooms to accommodate more
people in St Raphael's.
Present Day
Our present General
Secretary is Margaret Chambers, a former Home Teacher for the
Blind and a retired social worker.
In January 2000, the Guild appointed a Co-ordinator, to take responsibility for fund raising, supervision
of the management of St Raphael's and St Anne's and development of
the Branch network.
In 2002 a new Constitution established an Executive Committee of
seven Trustees as well as an Advisory Council so as to provide a
vehicle for members' views to be put to the Trustees.
At the end of 2006 St.Anne's Holidays for for
the blind in Clacton closed its doors.
In January 2007 Richard McEwan joined the
Guild as Chief Officer. |
